THE TIVOLI GARDENS DANCE TROUPE
|
|
The Tivoli Gardens Dance Troupe was established in 1977 as a brain child of Mrs. Jennifer Morgan-Garwood, Artistic Director / Chorographer mainly as an avenue to facilitate the graduates of the school active and to function as role models for the younger girls and boys.
The group currently consists of one hundred &twenty three (123) students with ages ranging from 4 to 39. Dance plays an important role in the lives of these young ladies and gentlemen who are mainly from low-socio economic areas of Kingston Jamaica, St. Andrew and St. Catherine. For them dancing is a vehicle that transport them to another place where they are able to express themselves. It also opens up opportunities they may otherwise not have access to.
The troupe has traveled and performed extensively locally and internationally performing for events ranging from charity socials to receptions for Heads of States. At home Tivoli Gardens Dance Troupe is the leading dance company and does an annual recital at The Little Theatre to sold out performances.

Growing up in a Congolese family, I grew up in full contact with Afro-Caribbean culture. I am one of the fortunate Africans of the Diaspora to know her ancestral roots. My mother’s family is originally Kikongo from Central Africa; my father’s lineage is Tukolore of West Africa. I think my genetic make up is apparent in both my physical appearance and in the way I move. I grew up in a Brooklyn, NY, dancing Soukousse, a contemporary, pop style of traditional Congolese dance. Now that I live in Atlanta, Im still dancing, performing and teaching Soukousse in and around Atlanta.
